Health - Pharmacy
Background
Berkem was originally a manufacturer of ingredients and extracts for pharmaceutical use.
Since the eighties, Berkem has supplied raw procyanidolic oligomers (PCOs) from grape seed and pine bark extracts for tablet manufacturing.
Polyphenols and health
Our know-how focuses on the production of pharmaceutical-quality plant extracts. These are mainly polyphenols from pine trees and grapes:
Catechin and epicatechin, which are procyanidols from grape seeds, are molecules with a vascular-protective function;
Pine bark procyanidols: Leucocianidol®, Flavan® active principle.
These two pharmaceutical-quality extracts are phlebotonics. Flavan is one of the rare pharmaceutical specialties that are indicated for the treatment of both vein circulation problems and hemorrhoidal crises.
Our services
Berkem obtained a certificate of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) from AFSSAPS (French agency for ensuring product safety for health) for the Leucocianidol® active principle.
Berkem can manufacture your active principle according to GMP regulations.
Interest of polyphenols for pharmaceutics
Polyphenolic derivatives are of great interest for the pharmaceutical industry, in particular because of their vascular-protective power (increase of capillary resistance) and their action against free radicals.
Control methods used to identify and quantify the different components of grape seed PCO lots have been updated through the development of high-performance methods that rely on separation techniques such as HPLC.
